An 18-month investigation by the NCAA and Independent Accountability Resolution Process (IARP) alleges Memphis committed several NCAA violations under head coach Penny Hardaway.
Initially, the NCAA investigated Memphis over the eligibility of James Wiseman, now playing for the Golden State Warriors in the NBA. The NCAA determined Wiseman ineligible after discovering that in 2017 Hardaway, while coaching at East High School in Memphis, paid Donzaleigh Artis, Wiseman’s mother, $11,500. Wiseman later played at Memphis for Hardaway, though only saw three games of action before the NCAA’s case was handed over to the IARP in 2020.
According to documents obtained by the Commercial Appeal in Memphis, Hardaway and the school are facing at least four Level I and two Level II NCAA violations.
